Brief description of the research topic:

The Laboratory of Applied Analytical Chemistry uses analytical chemistry in the study and protection of the natural environment. Its research goals are: environmental monitoring, evaluation of environmental pollution caused by human activity, fate of the pollutants in the environment, development of analytical tools dedicated for analysis of natural samples. The main topics and analytical challenges that we meet are: determination of trace amounts of metals (Zn, Cr, Tl, Hf, Pt, Rh, Pd, Ni, Co, Cd, Pb, Ti) and metalloids (As, Te) in matrices such as water, soil, sediments, plant and animal tissues, food, development of new methods of electrochemical determination of technologically critical elements (Ti, Hf, PGEs – new xenobiotics) and their speciation, phytoremediation processes (detoxification mechanisms of xenobiotics, including metal and metalloid nanoparticles), waste management and disposal (mining and metallurgical waste), speciation analysis (chemical and physical speciation, fractionation), preparation of new control materials, biomonitoring and sample banking, methods of sample pretreatment (sampling, milling, homogenization), analysis of the risk of errors during sample collection and preparation in advanced trace analysis and speciation analysis  (ppt-ppb level), digestion/mineralization in open and closed systems (microwave assisted) and UV-assisted degradation of organic matrix (accelerated chemically or catalytically) for speciation analysis, application of solid phase extraction in trace speciation analysis (sample matrix simplification, separation and/or preconcentration of analytes, fixation of speciation at the sampling site).
